Volunteer Code of Conduct

All volunteers must review and sign the Code of Conduct before they are able to volunteer on a campus with CISNT.  Code of Conducts will be distributed as a part of volunteer training.

Volunteer Code of Conduct

1. Honor your commitment. Be dependable and on time for your weekly visits at the school. Your student looks
forward to this meeting time. Please contact the CISNT campus staff if you need to miss a week or need to change the
meeting time.

2. Sign in and out at the school office (unless otherwise directed). Be sure to wear an identifying name badge.|

3. Proceed to designated volunteer area. (i.e., cafeteria, library, classroom, CISNT office, etc.) All volunteer areas
must take place in rooms with open doors on the school grounds in sight of school personnel or CISNT staff.

4. Students must remain on the school campus. Exceptions may include activities that are promoted through the
school or CISNT.

5. Volunteers may wish to become involved in school events with students. Participation is encouraged, but not
required.

6. Respect cultural, social, and religious differences. Respect students’ diversity.

7. Texas law requires any person who believes that a child is being abused, neglected, or exploited to report the
circumstances to Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. 1-800-252-5400

8. Volunteers are discouraged from giving students gifts. Volunteers may, however, give the student books, pencils,
pens, magazines, posters, etc., as rewards and incentives for academic/behavior achievement or birthday recognition.
Value should be kept under $10.

9. Volunteers are role models. Please dress and speak “kid friendly.”

10. Volunteers will refrain from any of the following activities with students/families served in the CISNT mentoring
program:• Selling products or marketing of any kind• Distributing literature not provided to you by CISNT

11. Volunteers must appreciate the diversity of the students and be respectful of the U. S. Constitution’s prohibition of
establishing or sponsoring any religion in the schools. All volunteers’/mentors’ efforts during the school day must
be non-sectarian in nature.

12. In the event that a physical altercation breaks out in the presence of a CISNT volunteer, their first responsibility is to
contact the school security or administration. It is the policy of this agency that its volunteers will not jeopardize
their safety by attempting to stop the fight themselves.

13. Volunteers will treat all information about a child or family as strictly confidential.

14. In regards to the issue of human sexuality, it is CISNT’s intention to follow Texas law, laid out in Senate Bill 1: We
will promote abstinence from sexual activity as the preferred choice of behavior in relationship to all sexual
activity as it relates to our students.

15. Don’t share personal information. Volunteers should never share personal information nor take personal
information from a student such as phone number or e-mail address. If you have an account on a site such as
“MySpace” or “Facebook” please keep those accounts private.

16. Don’t talk with your student about financial status.
