| The Beginning of a Mentor Relationship |
|
Today was the first day of the huge Robson Ranch grandparent mentoring program. Approximately 20 mentors came to Borman to mentor 40 students. Some students were still in the process of receiving parent permission. One of these students lives in foster care and took the papers home to his social worker. The next day I checked with him and he was distraught that the papers weren't signed yet. I told him not to worry and that I would speak to his case worker. I spoke with his case worker and she assured me she would sign the forms so he could start today. As agreed, he brought the forms today in time to join in the mentoring program. Since he had been in process, I had not assigned him to a mentor but had someone in mind. There I am in the library introducing students to their grandparent mentor for the year. This little boy waited patiently in line. When I got close to him, he pointed to one particular elderly lady and said "I want her." Since he was a special case, I ignored his comment and moved to another child to see how persistent he would be. Sure enough, next time I got close, he pointed to the same lady and said "I want her." I said, "You want her?" to which he nodded enthusiastically. So I took him over and introduced him to his new mentor. When the session was over, I took his new mentor aside and told her how adamant he was that he wanted her for his mentor. She was thrilled he was so excited. What makes this story so heart-warming is that he has been in foster care for the last year with his brother. This year his brother was moved to another facility and now he is alone in his situation. The boy is only in first grade. He is so excited about his new mentor, and I know he will really blossom from this service this year! |
