Communities In Schools of North Texas to Open Dropout Prevention program at Killough LHS North

Lewisville, TX – October 28, 2008:

Communities In Schools of North Texas (CISNT) has been awarded a grant from the Texas Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Department to provide dropout prevention and intervention services to students at Killough Lewisville High School (LHS) North in Lewisville ISD. The new CISNT program will include case management, parental and family involvement, career awareness and academic enrichment including mentoring for students at Killough LHS North . CISNT expects to open the new program in November.

“For several years CISNT and our volunteers have been serving students at Central Elementary, Hedrick Elementary, Lakeland Elementary and DeLay Middle School. Opening a CISNT program at Killough LHS North means that we are now able to serve students as they take one step closer to graduation,” said Gary Henderson, CISNT Chief Executive Officer. “Our focus now must shift to securing funding for a CISNT dropout prevention program at Lewisville High School.”

The purpose of the CISNT program at Killough LHS North is to help 9th grade students reduce or eliminate delinquent behaviors such as substance abuse or gang activity, to improve academic achievement and to resolve attendance issues. While case management is important to achieving these goals, volunteer mentors for at-risk students have shown to have a positive effect on the student’s delinquency behavior and academic performance. CISNT plans to aggressively recruit and train volunteer mentors very early in the implementation of the new program at Killough LHS North.
