US Congressman Charles Stenholm Visits Communities In Schools

On Thursday, August 29, 2002 Communities In Schools of Denton County was honored with a visit from US Representative Charles Stenholm of the 17th District of the House of Representatives. The Congressman arrived at Seven Hills Elementary School and was greeted by CIS students waiting to meet him. The children drew pictures of "What CIS Means To Me" and introduced themselves by saying their name, what grade they are in and showing the Congressman their picture. The students described their pictures explaining how they received help and benefited from the programs.

The Congressman treated students by reading the book House Mouse, Senate Mouse, by Peter and Cheryl Barnes. The story explains to children the process of enacting legislation in Washington, D.C. Afterwards CIS staff, board members and Seven Hills Principal, Sharon Bradberry had the opportunity to talk with the Congressman one on one about the program and the benefits to the students and families in the community.

A reception with many community members followed the site visit. CIS Board President, Carla Zuniga spoke to the crowd about the local CIS program, the successes of students involved with the program and the benefits the program brings to the community. Local dignitaries such as the Mayor of Decatur, City Councilmen from Rhome and Newark, Northwest and Decatur ISD School Board Members, Andrew Rottman, President of Wise County United Way and Superintendents from Decatur and Northwest ISD had the pleasure of hearing from the Congressman. Congressman Stenholm spoke about education and gave everyone a summary of the important events that are happening in Washington. Each individual had the opportunity to speak with the Congressman one on one and express their views, concerns and triumphs.

Communities In Schools is very grateful to the US Representative Charles Stenholm for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit our program. We would like to thank Northwest ISD and especially Sharon Bradberry, for their hospitality in allowing us to hold the event at Seven Hills Elementary School. Not only were we able to share with Congressman Stenholm the need for Communities In Schools, but as a result of his visit many other community members were able to learn about the many needed services that are provided in our community.
